- COVID-19 Vaccine Update - News - Wayzata Children's Clinic
We have limited availability of primary series pediatric Covid-19 vaccine for all ages. COVID-19 Vaccine Update We are experiencing an unexpected supply shortfall of the Moderna primary series pediatric Covid-19 vaccine for all ages. The state health department (MDH) is longer supplying Covid-19 primary series vaccines for Minnesota. We anticipate having a steady vaccine supply in the late summer and fall as the vaccine marketplace stabilizes and becomes available through private suppliers. We have limited availability for the second primary series dose for patients ages 6 mos. - 5 yrs. ONLY and are hosting appointment only vaccine events on the following dates - Call to schedule . Delano - April 26, 2023 Maple Grove - April 27, 2023 Minnetonka - April 19, 2023 and May 3, 2023 Spring Park - April 20, 2023 At this time, we DO NOT have primary series second doses available for 6 – 11 yrs. or 12+ yrs. Use the Minnesota vaccine finder database to locate a different community site for the primary series Moderna Covid-19 vaccine. The CDC does allow for a change between vaccine brands (for instance, from Moderna to Pfizer) if the original vaccine is not available or the individual would otherwise not be able to be vaccinated. - 16, 17 years (M) - Wayzata Children's Clinic
16, 17 years (male) Nutrition Try to eat 3 healthy meals a day and make this a habit for life. Your performance in school and other activities and your ability to finish growing and strengthening will depend on the foods you put into your body. You need 3-4 foods a day high in calcium (milk, yogurt, calcium-fortified orange juice) to support the completion of your bone growth and continued bone strengthening. Also, 2-3 iron-rich foods (iron-fortified cereal, meat, eggs, or green leafy vegetables) a day are recommended to support your blood. Fiber is known to prevent stomach and colon illnesses (such as cancer) and heart disease. By reading food labels and planning ahead you will have more control over your diet. "Junk" foods taste great but can deprive your body of what it really needs and can put on excess weight. Try not to get into eating habits that will be tough to break later on, including eating on the run or in front of the TV. Make a point to eat with your family at least once a day. It's a good time to get together on otherwise busy days. If you are unhappy with your appearance or performance, take a good look at your eating and see what you could change. If you eat well, drink plenty of water, and exercise regularly, your body will look, grow and perform at its' best. If you are concerned about your size or growth, please talk to your health care provider. SLEEP If you find that you need more sleep than you are getting, try to go to bed earlier instead of sleeping in; getting up late can alter your normal body rhythm and make you even more tired during the day and sleepless at night. Also, try not to save all of your "think time" for bedtime — it often delays falling asleep. Wellness Visits If you find that you need more sleep than you are getting, try to go to bed earlier instead of sleeping in; getting up late can alter your normal body rhythm and make you even more tired during the day and sleepless at night. Also, try not to save all of your "think time" for bedtime — it often delays falling asleep. Sleep Always wear your seatbelt and helmet (when biking or in-line skating), even if no one else does. We see permanent, life-changing injuries resulting from simple accidents, and NO ONE thought it would happen to them. Wear sunscreen if you are outside. A good tan is not worth cancer. Take your body seriously. Make the decision not to smoke, take drugs, have sex, drink alcohol, or ride in a car with someone who has been drinking. Practice what you would say if someone pressured you. It only takes one mistake to change your life forever. If you feel you have made a past mistake, remember that you can always re-contract with yourself and make a better decision from now on. If you have questions about sex, HIV or AIDS, pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, please ask your mom, dad, or doctor or nurse practitioner. Introduce your friends to your family, negotiate your curfew times reasonably, and expect that your parents will want to know where you are (yes, they are still responsible for you). Earn respect and trust by demon-strating that you are responsible and deserving of the privileges you want. Remember that driving is a privilege, not a right. Take this seriously. And in case you didn't know, Minnesota State Law prohibits any driver under the age of 18 to use a cell phone while driving. If you are in sports, make sure the playing areas are kept up well, and all protective equipment fits and is in good shape. Never share head gear. Safety Most teenagers are developing longer-lasting and more personal relationships with others. It is often difficult to balance friends, school, extra activities and family. Prioritize the demands on you, and try to sit and talk with your mom or dad a little every day. You may not always agree on things, but talking about your differences will help you understand each other better. This age can be stressful for teenagers. They can feel the pressure to look for the right college, hang out with the right people, dress in the latest styles, get better grades, get a part-time job, or develop individuality. The future can be an exciting, and scary, thought. If you are finding yourself getting stressed out more than you feel you should or can reasonably handle, please reach out and talk to someone. A friend, parent, favorite teacher or coach, counselor, or health care provider can offer support. Social, Family, & School Most young men have gone through the majority of "puberty" changes by now and will continue to experience height growth and increased body strength and tone (possibly for years). Your comfort with your changed body will increase with time. Most young women are finished with their growth and development by now. Continue to respect other people's privacy and need for space. If you have questions or concerns about your health, body changes or sexuality, please ask your mom or dad or your health care provider here. We look forward to seeing you again for a check-up next year! - 18 months - Wayzata Children's Clinic
18 months Nutrition Offer 3-4 meals and 1-2 snacks a day of carefully cut table foods, and include 12 to 16 ounces of whole milk. Your child can eat the same foods that you do, and will probably wish to feed herself without your help. Fingers will still work much better than utensils, but encourage appropriate use of spoons and forks. Having your child eat only in her high chair (for all meals and snacks) encourages her to be a part of the family meal, and avoids "grazing" habits and potential choking situations. This is an excellent time to take your child completely off the bottle if you have not already done so. Carrying a bottle around the house can lead to cavities in the front teeth, and is a difficult habit to stop. The typical toddler eats well at only one or two meals each day (dinner is usually the pickiest) and eats better away from home. Avoid battles at the table. Your responsibility is to provide healthy food choices and praise whatever is eaten. You cannot make your child eat. See our handout "Feeding Your Toddler, Age 1 to 3" if you are interested in more information on age-appropriate serving sizes and choices. Wellness Visits Parents are encouraged to brush their child's teeth with a toothbrush twice daily. Toothpaste is unnecessary, but a small dab may be just the incentive for a resisting toddler. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends routine dental visits starting now. Oral Health Most children sleep 10-12 hours each night and may take one nap during the day. Be gentle, but firm, with nighttime and nap routine. If your child tries to climb out of the crib, place the mattress of the floor and start looking for the bigger bed. The convenience of the crib is not worth the risk of a fall. Sleep Believe it or not, you have already started toilet training your child. Every time you acknowledge her diaper you are giving information about her body that will be used later when she learns to use the toilet. Consider the terms you will want her to use regarding elimination, and be positive ("wet", "dry", "urine" versus "messy", "stinky"). This is a good age to put the toilet chair in the bathroom, mainly to make it a normal part of the room and not something strange that shows up when the time is right for training. It is also helpful to decrease attention to diaper changing. There are many entertaining books out there regarding this topic! Elimination Toddlerhood is one of the most dangerous ages due to lack of good depth perception and inability to control impulses. Energy is relentless! Recheck all previously childproofed areas, including the garage and lawn. Children at this age have more courage and speed and often go down unguarded stairways or fall on or off sharp-edged furniture; constantly supervise. Keep the Poison Control Center (800-222-1222) phone number handy. Prevent drownings. Never allow your child near a pool, lake, bathtub, or bucket of fluids unless you are with her. Burns happen quickly at this age. Irons, curling rods, lamps, light bulbs, cigarettes, candles and hot liquids are all within reach of a busy, exploring toddler. Vacuum cleaners (in use) are also a hazard. Toddlers are wonderful, but can be frustrating. Avoid the potential for Shaken Baby Syndrome by taking breaks from your child before your temper flares. Call a relative or friend for help, or the Parent Warmline (612-813-6336). If you're at the end of your rope, call the Crisis Connection (612-379-6363) or Minneapolis Crisis Nursery (763-591-0100); they can help you get a break. We would like to see your child again for a routine checkup at age TWO. By then your child will be verbal and animated, bringing out all of your best traits! No vaccines are usually due at that visit. Please try to be at least 10 minutes early for all scheduled well-child visits. As the saying goes, don't sweat the small stuff. - 10, 11 years (M) - Wayzata Children's Clinic
10, 11 years (male) Nutrition It is your responsibility to eat 3 meals every day of healthy foods. The Food Pyramid is available to help guide your choices. No one is perfect, but try to make many more healthy choices than "junk food" choices. Breakfast is important — it sets your energy level for the whole day. You will do better not only at school but also at after-school activities just by eating a good breakfast. Try to eat at least 3-4 foods every day that have calcium (milk, yogurt, calcium-fortified orange juice). Your bone strength and growth (now and in the future) depends on it. Many adults wish they had known to eat better when they were younger. Some illnesses could have been prevented by eating more fiber (fruits and vegetables, breads and cereals). You can take on more responsibility for creating your meals and helping with the shopping. Try to eat with your family as much as possible. As your life gets busier, you will want this time to sit and talk with your mom or dad. Some people your age are concerned about their size and weight. If you eat well, drink water, and exercise, your body will naturally grow at its'own pace. If you are concerned about your size, or a friend's, please talk to your health care provider. Wellness Visits You probably have only one set of molars (4 teeth) due to come in. Good brushing now will pay you back well later in life. See your dentist 2 times a year. Teeth Your body still needs at least 10 hours of sleep a night to rest and store up energy for the next day. Try not to save all of your "think time" for bedtime — it often delays falling asleep. Sleep Always wear your seatbelt and sit in the back seat of the car. Wear your helmet if you are riding a bike or in-line skating, even if no one else does. Permanent, life-changing injuries have resulted from simple accidents. Wear sunscreen if you are outside. A good tan is not worth cancer. Never go near water without an adult, and wear your life jacket if boating. Never take medicine (including vitamins) without your mom or dad helping you figure out how much you need. Too much can cause serious illness. Give your body only the best. Make the decision now that you will never smoke, take drugs, or drink alcohol. Talk with your family about how they feel, and about what you learn in school. Practice what you would say if someone (a friend or stranger) offered you cigarettes, drugs, or alcohol. Your friends and family may not do many things together, but introduce them to each other. They all care about you, just in different ways. Take a basic first aid class and maybe even a babysitting class. If you are in sports, make sure the playing areas are kept up well, and all protective equipment fits and is in good shape. Never share head gear. Safety Many people your age spend a lot of time with friends. Sometimes parents feel that you do not care about them as you used to. Participate in scheduling a "family" event at least once a week, and sit and talk with your mom or dad at least a little every day. You may find that you disagree more now with their rules and beliefs. You are different people. Talk openly about how you feel or things you'd like to change. And remember to take some "free time" just for yourself every day. Family You may have noticed that some of the girls you know have started showing signs of "puberty", or body changes. It is normal for girls to start their body changes before boys. These changes can make people curious, excited, nervous, or embarrassed, so respect other people's feelings and privacy. And remember, your time will come, too. Boys usually start noticing body changes (armpit and pubic hair, facial hair, acne, body odor) at ages 12-14, with the largest height growth between ages 13-16. If you have any questions about body changes or sexuality, please ask your mom or dad or your health care provider. There are also many good books on these topics and we would be happy to give you suggestions. We look forward to seeing you again for a check-up next year. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions about your body or health. Try to be at least 10 minutes early for all of your check-ups.
